I can't expalin what it was like seeing him live when I was a teenager, the best I can come up with is it was like nothing else.

If you've never heard this album, do yourself a massive favour and listen to it. It's by Anthony Meynell of Squire, and is in my opinion one of the best albums ever released, certainly in the top 10. Meynell is, to my mind, Britain's most underrated singer/songwriter. Blue Summer Days came out in 1997 and is made up of 12 glorious tracks of delicious pop music. This playlist has the album in it's proper running order, so no fiddling about with the tracks is neccessary. Give it a go!

Not exactly recent, but one to listen to nonetheless.

Ha! - 'dog, cat.....and a working man', in that order.

A well-known tune, but Freddie Hubbard is tremendous - he plays like a middleweight boxer here, all shoulder. Brilliant.

This is from an album Boz Scaggs made in the 1990's. He's one of those musicians you have to search for the good stuff. He does all kinds of music - blues, country & western, disco, soul, pop - but when he gets good material...this is a really bitter song, but brilliantly executed.

    • My partner in crime, Kate, is a big Boz fan (disco era mostly). I’ve never really paid attention, this track could make me go looking Ernie.

This was released last summer. In places it sounds like a rehearsal tape but it's well put together. There is a version of 'Nature Boy' - a well-recorded standard (most notably by Art Pepper) that is sublime. If I had my time again, and if I had been a musician, and if I had been a bass player, I would have wanted to play like Jimmy Garrison.
