TV programmes and films - what are your favourites?

Just wondering what we all watch when there's not much on the television? Quadrophenia is the obvious one of course, but I confess I've never seen it all the way through.
On the series front, on my shelf there are box sets of the Mrs Peel & Tara King Avengers, of Gerry Anderson’s UFO, some original Star Trek.
Films wise, I’ve the 1967 Casino Royale (plotless and confused, but I love every weird minute), The Italian Job, Roman Holiday, all the Beatles films (sorry…), Breakfast at Tiffany's, etc. There’s Metropolis, some lesser known French films, a Small Faces documentary, and Cracked Actor.
On the more general side of things there are also two of my favourite films, 2001 and Lawrence of Arabia, but my favourite film of all must be How to Steal a Million, with Audrey Hepburn and Peter O’Toole.

What're your favourites?

  • Haven't bought a cable for my TV yet, but I just recently binge watched the first season of The Optimists from 2017 streaming it online. Great clothes, sets and series set in 1960s Soviet Union. Can't wait to see season 2.

    • This is a great 1970s series, A reporter *Kolchak* chases down Vampires, demons, werewolves etc. It has B movie magic all over it, definitely worth a watch. You can find it on YouTube if anyone is interested.

    • That's one that passed me by H and I do like intrigue, suspense and horror. This sounds like Kojak with hair, teeth and claws on so will check it out man ;0)

    • It's quite good if you like a B movie vibe Gary.

  • When it comes to TV, I really like Sherlock and Doctor Who (the proper Doctor Who, not the mess of a series we've just been given, with the exception of some great acting from Jodie Whittaker). On the subject of films, some of my favourites are:

    Stand by Me

    Ordinary People

    Field of Dreams

    To Kill a Mockingbird

American Graffiti (I know it's got an American focus, but although Quadrophenia is a very good film, I prefer American Graffiti!)

    Pleasantville

P.S. You don't need to apologize about the Beatles, they're an amazing band!

"Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" and "The Love Bug" are a few popular movies that turned 50 in 2018.
  • Just finished binge-watching the German late 50's period dramas Ku'damm '56 and Ku'damm '59. Both series are fantastic and happened to see a couple of Heinkels which made me smile somewhat! :-)

    • I have a few friends in Melbourne who ride them and Maicoletta also. An acquaintance of mine who I was in a CWA Branch with, had a Heinkel in the 1960s.

      Have you seen the show?

  • Tyler Durden...

"Warning: If you are reading this then this warning is for you. Every word you read of this useless fine print is another second off your life. Don't you have other things to do? Is your life so empty that you honestly can't think of a better way to spend these moments? Or are you so impressed with authority that you give respect and credence to all that claim it? Do you read everything you're supposed to read? Do you think every thing you're supposed to think? Buy what you're told to want? Get out of your apartment. Meet a member of the opposite sex. Stop the excessive shopping and masturbation. Quit your job. Start a fight. Prove you're alive. If you don't claim your humanity you will become a statistic. You have been warned- Tyler."
