What Gig's Have You Been To?

Couldn't see a thread dedicated to live music.

I went to see The Specials last night at Rock City,Nottingham.  Good gig small venue (about 2500).  Decent atmosphere.  Was almost a very short concert with Mr Hall threatening to walk off after bottles were thrown.  It seems some people just can't help acting like idiots.  Some well dressed folks about too.  I'm always blown away when I see a women skinheads, a male skinhead so what?  But a woman skinhead that takes guts.

  • Really looking forward to some Modern Jazz this weekend. I will be escorting a lady who was a 'Tottenham Royal' dancer/face, who gave me a much more in depth education when it came to Mods and the Blues. Being a revivalist, with a broader range and wider selection on the foibles of mod, I introduced her to modern jazz. Which she at first turned her nose up at, saying it was the domain of the more highbrowed Modernist (elitism! don't you just love it!) who frequented The Flamingo and/or The Marquee. But over time, I convinced her that the two were inextricably linked. You can read more of Joan the mod's best thoughts in the upcoming, fantastic looking 'Mojo Talkin': Under The Influence Of Mod' book by the indubitably skilled writer and publisher Tony Beesley.

Me, myself and I is just glad to be fixing up, sharp and proper for a great night out with some like minded people and all that jazz... ;0)

  • Robin Eubanks and the Essen Jazz Orchestra yesterday; good to dig some live Jazz again!

  • Day 4 of the Ballarat Beat Rockabilly Festival watching local band the Radio Waves playing at Sutton's House of Music. Free entry! Hope to book them for the 2017 Melbourne Mods vs Rockers.
  • Got myself tickets for Geno Washington and the Ram Jam Band today, who will perform at this years' Glasgow Mod Weekender.
    • Looks like it will be a brilliant gig Kai. Who knows, with a bit of luck i may even manage along too. If not i will certainly enjoy the rest of the weekender.
    • There's a Dexys tribute as opener, playing all their 79-81 stuff, I suppose. Not everybodys cup, but I like that a lot, too. Fridays' club night will be at the Barony this time!? I must admit I liked the dingy Blackfriars more... ;-) Either way, looking forward to party in Glasgow again, Chris!!
    • Yeah it will be a great time that is for sure Kai. I agree with you and prefer Blackfriars for the Friday and Sunday nights, but the downside to it is that it only holds around 150 people so maybe not quite big enough for the Friday. I have to admit to liking quite a bit of the Dexys stuff, especially the early material. They had a great album out around 85 too which I have but cannot quite recall its name off the top of my head. I will also happily admit to detesting their 1982 album and stuff from that period.
    • The last two albums were brilliant too, quite different from their beginnings, though. Retrospect even Eileen wasn't too bad maybe; it's just that you still hear it 5 times per day on the radio, which makes them seem a bit of a one hit wonder. And that they certainly don't deserve.
    • Its all about opinions mate. I never liked it when it came out in the Spring/Summer of 1982 and the constant playing of it at weddings and such has certainly not helped. To me they had a lot of good music and stuff like 'Tell me When my Light Turns Green' is top rate. I associate a lot of their early stuff with the start of the revival and those brilliant times so the great music chimes in with a lot of those memories.
    • All the more I hope you'll make it to the gig, Chris! ;-)
